When it comes to education, one Washington lawmaker says getting back to basics might be the way to inspire kids in the classroom. Jesse Young says the school assessment process needs reform. Ruth Johnson reports from Olympia.
Johnson: Jesse Young is a Republican from Gig Harbor. He says out-of-control top down management may be damaging the classroom environment.
Young: “One more directive, one more directive, one more directive, and now all of a sudden kids are doing nothing but taking tests, and they are not learning.”
His legislation would reform the school assessment process. He says an over-emphasis on standardized testing is having a negative effect..
Young: “The more tests piled on kids, the more anxiety they are getting. And the end of the day, now they don't have anything except an apprehension of taking tests and they are not performing as well.”
Johnson: The Washington Education Association supports Young's House Bill 2670.
